Some of the 9/11 family members both publicly and privately pleaded with Holder to allow these mass murderers to be tried under military law since this was a self-admitted, military-styled planned attack on America specifically and the Capitalist West in general. Holder said he acknowledged their anger, but would not change his mind. Coming to the defense of his AG, Obama told reporters that those who were “offended by the legal rights accorded Mohammed by virtue of his facing a civilian trial rather than a military tribunal won’t find it offensive at all when he’s convicted and when the death penalty is applied to him”. Really?

First of all, under civil procedure, to reach a conviction which would warrant the death penalty, the jury first must find the defendants quality beyond all reasonable doubt. Where in New York City are you going to find 12 unbiased possible jurists? No so in a military tribunal which has a five member panel. The rules of evidence in civil court are much stricter. For instance, information gather through intelligence agencies may or may not be allowed. Not so in military court. Under military law, rules of evidence are less strict (for instance, hearsay, video or audio tapes and similar evidence not allow in civil courts are allowed in military courts, and their methods of gathering remain secured. Confessions obtained under “torture” are not admitted but then again, what’s torture and what’s a persuasive inducement?). Because of the nature of military tribunals, the trials themselves move much quicker, which is important since each of the defendents will be tried seperately in civil court. Appeals (and there will certainly be appeals and countless delays filed) don’t last years in military court. And let’s talk about the death penalty itself. If found guilty, punishment is swift and certain under a military tribunal. Historically, the convicted prisoner is either shot or hanged (can we do both?). And just in case you’re wondering, this matter will have to be tried in federal court in order to seek the death penalty since the New York Assembly shot down the death penalty in 2004 as unconstitunional.

The anticipated defendants will by Khalid Mohammed, and co-defendants Ramzo Binalshibh, Ali Abd al-Aziz, Walid bin Attash, and Mustapha al-Hawsawi; all of whom are currently being held at the Marine base located at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. They are expected to be brought to New York and held in a local New York prison during the duration of their trial. There are five more defendants awaiting trial before a military court, including Abd al-Rahim al Nashiri, who was the alleged mastermind of the attack on the USS Cole which claimed the lives of 17 US sailors. The 9/11 attack, masterminded by Khalid Mohammed, was responsible for the deaths of some 3000 innocent men and women, was globally acknowledged as the act of unprecedented cowardice. Mohammed also acknowledged that he personally beheaded journalist Daniel Pearl.

Reaction to Holder’s decision was swift. Senate Minority Leader, Mitch McConnell (R-KY) called the decision “a step backwards for the security of our country”. Ed Kowalski of the 9/11 Families for a Secure America thought that giving these “war criminals” protection under the US Constitution was the “wrong thing to do” and pointed out that it had never been done before. Well, its certainly true we didn’t afford the Japanese or German war criminals the opportunity to come to America and be tried under US federal law with all the protections allow a US citizen. Holder said in his statement to Congress that he will turn over the case to the prosecutors for the Southern District of New York, which incidentally is located in Lower Manhattan and just blocks away from the former site of the Twin Towers.

Mayor David Bloomberg was delighted at Holder’s decision. Stating through a spokesman that “we have the resources and logistics” and added that “security problems posed by the trial would not be an issue”. NYC Police Commissioner Ray Kelly agreed and thought the decision was “highly appropriate”. Needless to say, the ACLU was also delighted with the decision. I fully expect they will provide the attorneys and ample resources to needed for the defense.

My Opinion

I understand where Mr. Holder is coming from, and I think I understand what he’s trying to do. He’s trying to say to the terrorists, both here and around the world “we’re not like you. We will not simply kill for death's sake. We are a nation of laws, and those laws apply to everyone”. The idea is to show the world, especially the Islamic world that our system works without fear and without malice. In the face of such a heinous crime, it’s human nature that our first reaction is to seek revenge, but we can overcome our desire for vengence by applying the same laws to those who hate everything we stand for that we would to our own citizens. They want to destroy civilization. We want to preserve it through our laws of justice, which serve as our foundation.

As I said, I believe this is Mr. Holder’s intent, but I’m not entirely of the same opinion. I believe bring these individuals to New York for trial may be fitting, but it may also make NYC a new target, not to mention the costs to New York taxpayers. Given the clumsiness of our prosecutors of late who have either lost or nearly lost what should have been “slam dunk” cases, I’m not sure I want to give these animals any chance of getting off. Indeed, I don’t want to give them any opportunity to use our courts as a forum to spew their hatred of America and Americans. If we’re trying to send a message, I don’t think those for whom the message is intended are listening. The only message they understand is fear and power. I believe we should demonstrate to them that they inspire no fear in us, and we will stamp out their contempt with contempt. In my opinion, the terrorists should be tried by a military tribunal free of the media circus (though, perhaps at a different location than at Gitmo), and if found guilty, promptly executed by the swiftness means possible. Their bodies should be burned and their ashes scattered to the four winds. No mercy to those who have shown no mercy.

Islam is a truly beautiful religion. It has given the world much. For anyone who has studied it, Islam is a religion of peace and intellectual inquiry. Sadly, however, these murders represent the sick minds who are attempting to hijack it. We can not and should not ever attempt to impose our culture or values on the people of the Middle East, or anywhere else for that matter. However, we should be willing to come to the aid of any people seeking to be freedom. Meanwhile, it’s ultimately up to Moslems around the world to stand up and send these cockroaches back into the dark where they belong.

Grim Reading, Crucial Choices on Energy
By Scott Bittle & Jean Johnson,
Authors of Who Turned Out the Lights: Your Guided Tour to the Energy Crisis

You know you're in for a bout of grim reading when the international agency charged with worrying about how we power the planet starts off its fact sheet with a question like this: "Why is our current energy pathway unsustainable?"

That's the message from the International Energy Agency, which issued its World Energy Outlook report earlier this month, the organizations' annual examination of the big picture. That picture itself hasn't changed all that much. The fundamental challenge is still to meet surging worldwide demand for energy, while at the same time coming up with ways to avoid global warming and keep energy relatively affordable. Basically, the IEA says everything depends on whether or not world leaders get serious about climate change, very soon.

Chances are you've never heard of the IEA which was founded during the 1973-74 oil crisis to "coordinate measures in times of oil supply emergencies." Now IEA serves as an energy analyst, advisor, and think tank for 28 member countries -- the United States and European countries mainly, but also including countries like Japan, South Korea, and Turkey. While the agency has enormous influence among policymakers, it barely registers with the public. And despite the IEA's wonky tone and elite audience, the report has one great strength when it comes to getting the public involved: it focuses on choices and alternatives.

Here what IEA lays out in its 2009 report card:

• If we do nothing, then worldwide energy demand is projected to soar by 40 percent by 2030. The vast majority of that increase is going to come in the developing world, as people in China, India and throughout Asia see their standard of living rise. Even keeping up with that demand would require investing another $26 trillion. And unless things change, most of that energy is going to come from fossil fuels, which means "dire consequences for climate change" and air pollution, the IEA said.

• On the other hand, if world leaders committed to fighting climate change increased energy efficiency, greater use of renewable energy, and policies like cap-and-trade or carbon taxes designed to discourage use of carbon-emitting fuels, that would cost another $10.5 trillion (on top of the $26 trillion). But energy demand growth could be cut in half, and greenhouse gases would decline.

The world has decisions to make about energy, and of course, so does the United States. Everything we've learned about how people get engaged in policy decisions shows that laying out choices and being honest and clear about the pros and cons is essential -- not to mention being the right thing to do in a democratic society.
In the energy and environment arena, the choices are far from perfect, but then that's pretty typical with major public policy issues. As we've been pointing out lately, this country's choices on energy and the environment are a lot better than our choices on, for example, Afghanistan.

Changing the way we use energy will cost money and force adaptations that many of us would not choose, given our druthers. But we also have to face that sticking with the status quo will also cost money, and we could well have change forced on us by tight energy supplies and growing environmental destruction. Continuing to rely on the world's default setting on energy -- fossil fuels -- is just not going to work.
World leaders, deadlocked on many of the details, are increasingly trying to lower expectations for the big climate conference in Copenhagen next month. But delay is only valuable if it helps break the deadlock later on. The choices are ours to make, and time is running short to make them.

Poll Results

Our last poll asked you if the GOP should have done more to support their nominee, Dede Scozzafava. Ms. Scozzafava, as you’ll recall, was a moderate Republican running in a moderate district against a Democrat and very conservative third party candidate. However, conservatives, including many leading Republicans, came out in support a third party candidate rather than either support her or stay out of the fight. As a result, she quit the race and through her support behind the Democrat. The result was predictable enough---the Democrat won.

Fifty percent of you thought the GOP goofed by not backing its own nominee. The balance was split equally between those of you who thought it was ok for GOP leadership to back another party's candidate and those of you who weren’t quite sure. Personally, I’ve been position simular to Ms. Scozzafava. However, once in a fight, I never back down and I would never quit like she did, but I sure gave my local party hell and I fought on even harder.

How much more can be said about Jim King. Really. I started an investigation about 1 and 1/2 years ago because I felt that there was some shady campaign finance violations that must be dealt with in order to protect the intent for anyone who runs for office. These were not minor violations there were serious concerns about the money Katie got for her election.

What started out as just one simple question: Is it legal? turned into something much greater. I didn't plan it there was no personal vendetta just thought there were relevant questions to be asked and answered for the sanctity of elections.
Unfortunately King and/or his handlers decided to start spreading rumors about me to other folks including bloggers and media types trying to denigrate myself and my integrity. You can read about that here: Louisville News and Politics: AND THE BEAT OF THE KING GOES ON........ At that point I made it a mission to seek the truth and get answers. This of course as you all know has led to so much information that I have shared through the last 18 months or so that today the King's have become the poster children for all that is wrong with egotistical, arrogant power run amok. Especially when they represent We The People.

The information I get has come from multiple sources and I get calls daily asking me to check out something or other on the King's. Some things I print after investigated that I can substantiate and so many others I do not because I cannot verify. Such is life.

Throughout this time I have been labeled many things a sycophant, cyber stalker, dumbass, one trick pony. Well you get the gist. I have faced my fair share of threats as well from King staffers, or King himself (some have been through the Internet and emails so who knows). No biggie.

What I cannot fathom throughout all of this is where has the mainstream media been and why has King been allowed a free ride until now?

Andy Alcock has been the only reporter even interested in covering the things King has been up to throughout this time until recently. Kudos to Andy. But now the rest are jumping on the bandwagon. All I can say is this.

It is about time. Take a look at the picture above in this article. King purposefully, knowingly laid out a false impression that St. X was supporting him and the alumni was hosting a fundraiser for him. This of course is preposterous as everyone now knows King lied again.

He apologizes now saying the email was only meant for friends and colleagues. I ask this: Do your friends not know how to contact you or you them? Doesn't seem likely that is a problem for friends does it?

Secondly ask yourself this. How did King get the list in the first place? Gaining the list and using it illegally are quite different than responding what your intended audience was. Using it illegally is the key here not who actually received it. And that is the problem with this guy. Knowingly violating any laws he deems as being in the way of what he seeks.

I know how Tierney is trying to spin it (read more about those ties here: Louisville News and Politics: BRIDGE PANEL SELECTIONS: METRO COUNCIL HYPOCRITES) and it does not add up.

Even if we are to believe the email list was garnered off of St. X's email list from the website it clearly states those email addresses cannot be used for solicitation. The school’s website “user agreement” says specifically that the information is not to be used for solicitation. (St. X says King didn’t have authorization to contact alumni courier-journal.com The Courier-Journal)

Are we now to assume that after all the mess King started by trying to manipulate the KREF , a mess that is continuing today, that he still has not learned how to read and obey the law?

The evidence does not add up and quite frankly based on the history of King and his wrongful doings we should demand he step down from the Metro Council at this point as well. We deserve so much better as a citizenry we cannot allow this type of situation to continue.

We cannot say his staff does not know better.

Hell he hired every known campaign strategist in town for this race. SO either ALL of them are idiots OR they are just on the payroll for looks, or simply bought to keep them from working for his competition. It is becoming increasingly clear that King does what he wants.

While I may not have much respect for some of the folks he hired to "run" his campaign I certainly do not think all are idiots. Some are idiots, in my opinion admittedly, but I doubt ALL are stupid enough to tell this clown what he is doing is OK.

And therein lies the rub.

King does what he wants when he wants and the law or anyone in the way be damned. That is not a suitable thing for anyone wishing to represent us.

That is exactly what we do not need in government and it is time to tell him so.

For those who have been bought and paid for to help cover his mistakes I would say get out of the way now and protect yourself. If you think this will help your reputations in any positive way think again and look at yourself in the mirror.

For Jim King quit the Mayoral race and resign the Council. For once in your life do the right thing. To do anything different is an insult to those you seek to represent.

LOUISVILLE STUNS NO. 4 FLORIDA STATE (9/26/02)

The Louisville football program's first "signature win" had come more than a decade earlier via a thrashing of Alabama in the Fiesta Bowl, but this was the monumental victory that set the tone for U of L's rise to prominence over the next few years.

In a torrential downpour, the Cardinals - who had already dropped games to Kentucky and Colorado State after entering the year with their highest preseason ranking in history - forced the fourth-ranked and unbeaten Seminoles into overtime.

On the first play of overtime, FSU quarterback Chris Rix had his pass intercepted by U of L free safety Anthony Floyd. One play later, Louisville running back Henry Miller burst through the middle and waltzed into the endzone, inspiring the soldout crowd at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium to storm onto the field and tear down the goal posts.

"They were better than we were," said Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden. "Before the season, I was very concerned about this game because they were playing as good as anybody last season. We simply did not stop them."

Bowden also praised Cardinal quarterback Dave Ragone, who he said was "as good as any quarterback in the country."

"We fed off an unbelievable crowd in a torrential downpour," Ragone said afterward. "They started ripping down the goal posts, ripping off my helmet, ripping off everything."

12. JERRY SMITH COMES HOME AND BEATS MARQUETTE (2/18/07)

Desperately needing a signature road-win, the once-struggling '07 Louisville Cardinals found one when freshman Jerry Smith buried a deep three-pointer just before the buzzer to stun No. 12 Marquette in front of a sellout crown in Milwaukee.

The win was especially sweet for Smith, a Wisconsin native who many felt was denied the state's Mr. Basketball honor because of his decision to take his game to Louisville.

"I'm just speechless," said Smith, who played his high school ball at Wauwatosa East. "I could have never dreamed this."

Remarkably, this was the third time in six years that the Cardinals had gone on the road and beaten the rival Golden Eagles with the aid of a made shot in the game's final seconds.

Vote or freedom will immediately cease being.

2003: Overtime Loss After Lefors INT

2005:  Total WTF game, USF destroys Brohm, Bush, Mario, etc. 45-14.  CardsFan922's streak of bad luck watching UofL games at BW3s on Bardstown Road continues (2004 @Marquette, 2004 Renardo Foster tears ACL)

2007:  Treat Guy fumbled the opening kick-off for a USF TD and it went down hill from there.  This is the only video evidence I could find of the 55-17 beat down:

So bad things seem to happen in South Florida, for some reason.

But the past doesn't matter, and this will be one of the weaker USF teams to welcome us to Tampa.  And the Cards defense has quietly put together defensive scores of 13 (Ark. State), 17 (WVU) and 9 (Syracuse) in the last three weeks.  Do we have a shot?  Will Froman do a Groethe impression?  Also, please note that in the simulated season, BJ Daniels was the starting QB.  And we win tomorrow 30-3.  We here at CardChron headquarters don't know if the fact the season was right about the first means it will be right about the second.

So what do we know about tomorrow?

According to the Courier-Journal, Adam Froman was mentally there even if he wasn't physically 100%, and they almost put Will Stein into the game against Syracuse.  The decision not to proved prescient (your move, Heiser) as Froman led them on the winning TD drive:

"You could tell he was a little rusty," Kragthorpe said. "But he made some nice plays for us off the scrambles. He can make some plays with his feet. He'll be fine."

Coaches considered pulling Froman from the game, but as quarterbacks coach Matt Wells said: "He was so into it mentally."

"If he wouldn't have been there mentally, we would have probably made a change, but he wasn't missing anything mentally," Wells said. "I expect him to come back and play at a high, high level this week."

USF's 9th Year Senior Carlton Mitchell (seriously, how long has that guy been there?) will apparently be healthy enough to play tomorrow, says the Trib

University of South Florida WR Carlton Mitchell (ankle) is probable for Saturday's game against Louisville.

Mitchell missed last week's game at Rutgers after suffering a high ankle sprain against West Virginia on Oct. 30.

"He's going to dress for the game," USF coach Jim Leavitt said. "How much he plays depends on how well he feels. He's getting close."

Mitchell, who showed no signs of being limited as he sprinted off the practice field Thursday, leads USF with 29 receptions for 542 yards, four touchdowns and 14 years of eligibility.

Part of that quote is altered from the original.  Can you guess which?

That same link summarizes the pre-game story lines in a nutshell: bowl-eligibility on the line, as long as they don't turn the ball over:

he Bulls (6-3, 2-3 Big East) can become bowl eligible with a win against Louisville (4-6, 1-4). On paper, that shouldn't be a problem as USF is an 11 1/2 -point favorite.

Turnovers, however, are the big equalizer. Through nine games, USF has committed 18 turnovers, but half (nine) have come in its three losses.

"You just can't turn the football over," offensive coordinator Mike Canales said. "That's been the demise of us."

USF has won only once since Oct. 3, but in that game (a 30-19 win against WVU), the Bulls were turnover-free.

USF better be careful, or Jim Leavitt will scare the bulls--t out of them at halftime:

The Bulls not only got trampled on the field, but also ESPN's A-team announcing crew had little good to say about the Bulls once the game got out of reach.

Even before the second half started and USF trailing 13-0, ESPN sideline reporter Erin Andrews provided a glimpse of the atmosphere around the Bulls.

"It was very loud, very intense, and very scary in there," Andrews reported someone told her of Coach Jim Leavitt's halftime speech.

Anyone who would like to volunteer to comfort EA as part of the D.E.N.N.I.S. system please leave your contact information for her in the comments.

So we face a USF team who was just humiliated on national television, who faces Miami in the Game of the Century next week on ABC at 3:30 PM, and we face them in a place we've never beaten them.

Go Cards!

Samantha did a good job in her closing "arguing [her] perspective" and using a "good theme."  She also "asked good questions" and "addressed some problems with the case head-on" and made her witness "real and sensitive" on direct examination.

Lily and Jamie competed in the second round.  They performed very well, and one of the three arbitrators voted for them.  Jamie was praised for her good delivery, for knowing the record well, for organizing her opening and direct well, and for her leading technique on cross.  Lily was praised by one arbitrator for "a very good summation," "very good direct questions," and a "good job" on cross examination.  One arbitrator provided each of them with a score of "superior" for the category of professional and ethical presentations.

http://feedproxy.google.com/%7Er/DepthReporting/%7E3/yJcQIDBO5Wg/what-can-president-learn-from-news.html What Can a President Learn from the News Media? http://feedproxy.google.com/%7Er/DepthReporting/%7E3/yJcQIDBO5Wg/what-can-president-learn-from-news.html image

Former President Richard Milhous Nixon rarely watched TV news or read the newspaper and instead relied on a daily summary typed up by his aides, a recently released study says.

The study, “What Can a President Learn from the News Media?,” (PDF) says Nixon’s reliance on the daily news summary is a cautionary tale for future presidents.

Nixon’s solution to the problem of news consumption was noteworthy: he avoided direct exposure to newspaper, television or radio reports almost entirely. Instead, he instituted an elaborate system of media monitoring that substituted for almost all first-hand consumption of the news. Nixon was not the first president to use his staff to monitor the news, but his monitoring system was more extensive than any of his predecessors. More importantly, Nixon was the first president to rely on such monitoring as his primary source of exposure to the mass media.

Reading the news summary was the first thing on Nixon’s schedule every day. He devoted 20 to 30 minutes to reading them, scrawling notes on the margins that “helped dictate a significant portion of the daily business for the White House staff,” writes Christopher F. Karpowitz, an assistant professor of political science at Brigham Young University.

Nixon’s marginal comments show that he used the summary to comment on the success of administration initiatives, to direct public relations efforts, to praise or discipline administrators, or simply to blow off steam.

The summaries were prepared by staffers Lyndon K. ('Mort') Allin and Patrick Buchanan. Although the summaries were advertised as the best way for Nixon to get an objective, cross-section of news coverage, they often were written in a way that fueled “the president’s already burning resentments and biases,” Karpowitz writes.

The summaries themselves tended to personalize the news, repeatedly drawing attention to the perceived biases of prominent reporters.

The possibility the summaries didn’t give him an entirely objective view of the news wasn’t lost on Nixon. Karpowitz notes, for example, that Nixon wondered if Buchanan’s distaste for his historic trip to China colored how Buchanan wrote the summaries. Buchanan was a newspaper editorial writer before joining Nixon’s staff and later ran for president himself.

Nixon’s antipathy toward reporters was established long before Woodward and Bernstein’s stories helped bring him down. In 1962, after a failed campaign for California governor, he famously declared his “last press conference” and told the reporters gathered for it that “You won't have Nixon to kick around any more.”

The study recalls historian Stephen Ambrose’s own research of the news summaries, which noted “the prevalence of violent verbs in Nixon’s responses”:

‘Get someone to hit him,’ Nixon would write about one reporter, or ‘fire him’, or ‘cut him’, or ‘freeze him’, or ‘knock this down’, or ‘fight him’, or ‘dump him’, or ‘don’t back off’.

Karpowitz analyzed Nixon’s marginal notes, dividing them into "spin," "policy," "vent," "praise," "discipline," "other," or "missing."

Roughly one-third of his comments were about “spin,” meaning they focused on image and PR, and 18 percent were to “vent,” meaning they expressed frustration or annoyance but didn’t direct anyone to take action. Another 18 percent dealt with actual policy.

Karpowitz concludes that in part because the summaries gave a few staff members too much power as gatekeepers, the summaries didn’t serve Nixon well.

For healthy presidential leadership, there may be no substitute for first-hand consumption of media stories, even if in managed doses. It can be said of presidential news summaries what is sometimes said of the relative merit of vitamin pills and nutritious foods: in a busy world, a chief executive may find it useful to resort to news summaries, but news capsules provided by a president’s aides are an imperfect replacement for at least some exposure to the real thing. The president whose media diet includes only summaries may be cognitively undernourished.

This year it was airline on-time performance.

The winning entry (PDF) used SAS to visualize various aspects of air traffic, including stylish calendar heat maps showing the number of flight departures delayed or cancelled.

The heat maps break each year into blocks for months, rows for the days of the week and squares for the days. Each square is colored from red to green depending on the intensity of some value, allowing you to spot patterns over time.

The Revolution Computing blog reported recently that the chief medical officer for a medical informatics company recreated the same graphics using R. The blog showed how the code could be used to visualize Microsoft’s stock price.

I had to change only a few letters in their example to show Gannett’s stock price instead:

http://loueyville.blogspot.com/2009/11/300th-entry-wee-hiatus.html 300th Entry: Wee Hiatus http://loueyville.blogspot.com/2009/11/300th-entry-wee-hiatus.html
This is just a heads up that I might be MIA for a little while, effective immediately. Loyal readers know that I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2008, and this Friday I will be having what I hope is the last of my reconstructive surgeries.

Big Mama Lou is heading to town tomorrow to nurse me through the recovery. She'll hang out until Thanksgiving-- by which time, I should be healthy enough to indulge in the usual partaking of the turkey.

It's kind of nice that it worked out that this is my 300th blog entry since starting Loueyville. It's a lovely time to take a moment to say how thankful I am for my loyal readers and for the friends I have made because of this blog. Loueyville.com is still a long way from being what I want it to be, but in many small ways, working on this blog has bettered my life.

So thanks. Be well. I hope you have a lovely Thanksgiving. I'll see y'all in December.

xo
Lou

http://feedproxy.google.com/%7Er/leoweekly/score/%7E3/nfbIdgfpm1Y/ Musin’ on a Tuesday Afternoon http://feedproxy.google.com/%7Er/leoweekly/score/%7E3/nfbIdgfpm1Y/ http://feedproxy.google.com/%7Er/DepthReporting/%7E3/4ve0xPEkhL8/overcoming-pdf-apoplexy.html Overcoming PDF apoplexy http://feedproxy.google.com/%7Er/DepthReporting/%7E3/4ve0xPEkhL8/overcoming-pdf-apoplexy.html yell[1]

Like many shallow, thoughtless people, my first response to something that annoys me is to condemn it rather than understand it. And so it is with PDFs, which have always pissed me off me because of the difficulty I've had extracting data from them. It's a good thing, then, that the Open Government Data wiki has a page, “The good and the bad of PDFs,” with some realistic scenarios on why people would choose to store information in PDFs, and suggesting that more understanding may be in order, rather than outrage.

In my experience reporters tend to think the worst of government bureaucrats, while assuming their own virtue. It may be that government agencies choose PDFs because it’s the most vexing format, but I doubt that’s always, or even typically, the case.

Here, for example, is a scenario offered on the Open Government Data wiki:

Sam and Alice work for the Governor's Budget Office. Recently, the Governor has just announced his spending plan for the current year, something that many, many people are interested in reading. After hours upon hours of work, they finally have the report done, complete with graphs, charts and images galore. A grand total of over 400 pretty pages ready for viewing.

The report is something that hundreds, maybe thousands of people are going to want to read, which presents an issue for Sam and Alice. They could print off hundreds or thousands of copies of the report, leave some in their office for people to pick up, mail out others and inter-office some more. When they look at the printing bill, however, neither Alice nor Sam are very happy with the cost.

After a little research, Alice finds out about PDF files. With a quick plugin for her copy of Word, she can create an electronic version of the report, which her tech people can then post on the Governor's public web site. Now, rather than printing off tens of thousands of pages, all they need to do is distribute a single link and the information is instantly accessible.

If you prefer the outrage, though, check out Sunlight Labs' recent "Adobe is Bad for Open Government" and the comments that followed.

http://louisville.about.com/b/2009/11/17/reader-question-louisville-mall-with-best-christmas-attractions.htm Reader Question: Louisville Mall with Best Christmas Attractions http://louisville.about.com/b/2009/11/17/reader-question-louisville-mall-with-best-christmas-attractions.htm Please, help us. My sister and I are coming from Georgia to visit my niece and her two very young children (8 months and 2 years old), and I am bringing my two tweens. We want to know which malls or shopping areas we should check out that would appeal to them all. I am hoping for train rides, fantastic decorations, sitting on Santa's lap, etc. My niece and husband are stationed at Ft Knox, so they are not very familiar with Louisville, although this summer we did find the zoo!

I would definitely encourage you to check out The Summit. This holiday season, they're offering photos with Santa and sleigh rides for the kids. It's a strip mall, and the outside is all decorated with Christmas lights. Plus, they have a Build-A-Bear Workshop and several baby/toddler clothing shops like Gymboree and Baby GAP.

For the tweens, there are a ton of stores at The Summit that they'll want to check out: Express, GAP, Old Navy, and Hollister, among others. Also, there is a Barnes and Noble for everyone to enjoy and lots of really great restaurants. While all of the malls are doing something for Christmas, The Summit seems to have the biggest selection for a group with people of all ages like yours (Visit Their Website).
