Snow day: The National Weather Service predicts Louisville will receive about three to five inches of the white stuff. Jefferson County Public Schools and the University of Louisville are closed. Several flights at Louisville International Airport are delayed or canceled. Around the city major thoroughfares and residential streets are blanketed with snow and slush. At a press conference held earlier today, Mayor Jerry Abramson said Metro government’s biggest concerns, however, are the freezing temperatures tonight. The city is handling the snowfall and road treatments, he says. The…

As a practicing omnivore, the rhetoric of PETA can be a little acerbic at times. I think a happy chicken is the tastiest kind of chicken despite how I’d be labeled as a murdering fascist. However, PETA’s proposal to erect a 5 1/2 foot-tall statue of a bloodied, crippled chicken in downtown Louisville makes more sense than it would at, ahem, first bite. From a press release: Eight long months after first requesting a permit from the city of Louisville to display a statue of a giant chicken with a decidedly anti-KFC message, PETA still has no permit. By soft I mean beer only, no food, just to get the taps warmed up and the stools broken in. Bruce was kind enough to take me on a tour of the two-level bar, which was amazing. State Senator Tim Shaughnessy is calling on Auditor of Public Accounts Crit Luallen to review the University of Louisville Medical Center. Sen. Tim Shaughnessy, a Louisville Democrat, dispatched a letter to Luallen last week that specifically questioned the monitoring of transactions made by the medical center and University Health Care, which provides insurance and Medicaid coverage for poor and disabled people in Louisville. -SNIP- Shaughnessy said he isn’t alleging wrongdoing. Instead, he wants Luallen to untangle the intertwined finances and board structures to make sure proper…

I can’t believe another year is already over. Heck, the first decade of the 21st century is already over, and what a decade it was! When I was a little kid, I used to figure up how old I would be when the 21st century rolled around and tired to imagine what the world would be like. I never thought we’d be living in a world of the Jetsons, Star Trek, or even Lost in Space, but back then, in the late1960’s (and given everything that was going on then), I thought we’d be living in very different sort of world. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve come along way in a very short period of time,…

Many have referred to this shift as the take over or hijacking of the Republican Party. First, a little history. For decades, the GOP was primarily a center right political party. The book has spoken to and for disenchanted youth for decades now, each generation since its initial publication finding voice in the lucid expression of disengagement. J.D. Salinger went reclusive decades ago. Given his impact, we kept waiting for more. We wait no longer. His name would come up in conversation now and again. Whether speaking with somebody of my generation, Baby Boomers, or a later one, there would always be a memory. The more literate would quote.

For all the lamentations about what journalism has lost in recent years, not enough attention is paid to what's been gained. Mashable is just one example of what is now a thriving online news and information ecosystem. And it's a self-sustaining one too, one where you can carve out a living. All…

The Newsosaur, Alan Mutter, says journalists are too promiscuous giving away their work so he's constructed a spreadsheet to calculate their true worth: It’s time for journalists to stop participating in their own exploitation by working for a pittance – or, worse, giving away their valuable services for free. Apart from the sheer righteousness of being paid an honest dollar for an honest day’s work, journalists need to stand together – and stand tall – to reassert the stature of their profession. The reason is simple: If they don’t put a value on what they do, then no one else…

John Tierney of The New York Times says accusing researchers of having conflicts of interest because of their industry ties is a cheap and easy way to avoid serious debate: Why are journalists and ethics boards so quick to assume that money, particularly corporate money, is the first factor to look at when evaluating someone’s work? One reason is laziness. It is simpler to note a corporate connection than to analyze all the other factors that can bias researchers’ work: their background and ideology, their yearnings for publicity and prestige and power, the politics of their profession,…

Alabama is a team that scores much better in transition than the do in the half-court. When forced into a half-court game or an offensive set the Crimson Tide struggle to get shots off. Despite these half-court struggles expect Anthony Grant to go against the grain a bit and attempt to slow the game down against the Wildcats. The Elephants of Alabama just do not have the depth or the guard play to run up and down the court with the ‘Cats. In their last game, a 74-67 loss to Ole Miss, they employed this same type of strategy in an attempt to limit the Rebels’ talented trio of…

Peter May, in a special to Yahoo! Sports, has penned his EARLY order for the upcoming (as in FIVE months from now) 2010 NBA draft. However, it is an interesting list, and at least one that could spark some healthy debate. The Pinkie Squad had just this debate one night here recently (they all run together these days). There were a couple topics discussed that relate directly to UK: 1) If he continues at this pace will Demarcus Cousins go number one over Wall based solely on size/potential? and 2) Cole Aldrich vs. Demarcus Cousins. May has Cousins going fourth and Aldrich sixth, definitely not…

Texting and using a cell phone are about as common today as brushing your teeth.  The problem for legislatures is that most people don't brush their teeth behind the wheel.  Many text and talk and drive. HB 43 would ban text messaging by all drivers and the use of cell phones by drivers under age 18. This is an expanding problem and these are proven factors in motor vehicle crashes.  Several states have passed bills similar to HB 43, and Kentucky currently has an executive order in effect that bans texting while driving a state vehicle.  At the federal level, a ban…

  • Wordpress Search Engine Result Exploit!

    1 Feb 2010 | 5:11 pm
I just figured out a fairly sneaky Wordpress exploit – one that you won’t even notice if you visit an exploited Wordpress installation with a “normal” browser like Firefox or Internet Explorer. The exploit only “does it’s thing” when visited by a non-standard browser like a text-only one (like old-school Lynx) or, the intended target of this exploit – a search engine crawler like GoogleBot. When this exploit gets loaded and sees GoogleBot, it spits out its content – which is normally a big wad of pharmaceutical SPAM, like Cialis, Viagra,…

This weekend, the US Gran Prix of Cyclocross was in Louisville, my hometown. Cyclocross is a nutty mix of cycling and running on grass, dirt and sand. The USGP is a national race series that offers races in a number of different categories, based on experience level, gender and age. Here in Louisville there were some 300? 400? riders. The “big” races are the Men’s and Women’s PRO races… but the rest of them are comprised of folks like me. Why is this man so happy? The USGP is a well-organized, well-sponsored event. The USGP is a circus, and when the circus lands…

    - Lock your doors, run and hide, bring in the brass monkey: The National Weather Service in Louisville has issued a winter storm warning for tonight. We are expected to get 4-6 inches of snow. That means anywhere between NO MEASURABLE SNOW to 15 inches of filthy wet slush that will cripple all ground and air transportation for 4 days. Stock up on good booze, gas up your generators and add some cable channels to your lineup. Or maybe warm up the car and go for a drive. This could be the big one. - In what turned out to be an unusually exciting game, my New Orleans Saints hog-tied and whipped…

I'm sure that by now you have read the news about the closure of the Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom amusement park. In this Courier-Journal article, Six Flags CEO Mark Shapiro whines about the cost of the lease at the fairgrounds. Shapiro also griped about not receiving a percentage of the parking fees. It should be noted that Six Flags is in bankruptcy due to the company's failed leadership, not because of an unfavorable lease agreement at the Louisville location. Kentucky Kingdom is perhaps best known throughout the country as the place where a 13 year old girl had her feet cut off in 2007 by a…

    - Rather than attack the real problem, (a foreign-owned, for-profit utility that threatens you with service disconnection before holding you at knifepoint and raping your pocketbook), some Metro Council members see fit to pad the utility's bottom line by raising money through non-profits to help struggling citizens pay heating bills. The idea of helping people stay warm is a noble one, but there is a better, more forcible way.  Stronger action must be taken immediately to lower costs, prevent service disconnections and protect the needy from the whims of the greedy, profit-mad…

Rather than deal with a massive budget deficit, revamping an outdated tax system, attracting new high-paying jobs to the state or allowing people to gamble as they see fit, Kentucky's General Assembly seems content to while away the days passing ridiculous and unnecessary measures which do nothing for the average citizen of this once-great Commonwealth. To Wit: Today, the dolts in the House passed legislation that creates an "In God We Trust" license plate. Mayor Abramson and his henchman are still refusing to kick in back-pay for a group of retired city firefighters for miscalculated overtime. The mayor's government is appealing to the state Supreme Court, a tactic that has failed miserably in the past. The thinking seems to be to put it off on the courts until Abramson is out of office. [C-J] What do you think of the way Metro Government has treated vital city employees during Abramson's tenure as mayor? Don't hold back. I really want to hear your opinion on this.
