    16 May 2012 | 12:51 pm
The Kentucky Coal Association — the propaganda arm of the coal industry in Kentucky — is very worried. Despite giant profits, there is a growing movement across the country — with a big assist by the EPA deciding to finally do their job — to switch to cleaner forms of energy. While 44 percent of America’s electricity was generated by burning coal last year, that number has dropped down to 36 percent today. Cleaner energy (natural gas still comes with lovely fracking) and clean energy (wind, solar hydro) are the obvious enemies to King Coal’s ashy rule, but…

Theo Bleckmann Hello Earth! The Music of Kate Bush (WINTER & WINTER) Most of the music I enjoy tends to fall under my pop thesis of music that makes you want to fight, fuck, or dance (with broad interpretations of each). Music that leans on art-for-art’s-sake usually bores me to tears or annoys me with overbearing pretense. I shouldn’t want to don a suit to listen to a record; music can be ‘important’ without being an impotent gallery piece. Just looking at the title above made me clench my, let’s say teeth. Reading further, at the words “German-born jazz singer,” turned the…

Peyton Siva appeared on the Inside College Basketball radio program with Jeff Goodman (and special co-host Robbie Hummel) Tuesday night and talked about the biggest keys for next season, how the team was able to turn it around last season, and how it will handle lofty expectations heading into next year. As far as preparing the younger guys on the team as Louisville heads into a season where it is expected to start off ranked in the top five, Siva says humility is key. "We've got to keep hem level-headed and not let last year's Final Four success go to their heads," Siva said. "Especially in…

Since the loss of Deitrich’s and the short-lived Le Beaujolais at the Douglass Loop, the lack of a good French bistro in this town has been a major whining point for foodies. Yum, I love me some fine diner fare. That’s fine “diner,” now, not fine “dining,” which I like, too, but which might be a little out of place in the noisy and very casual environs of The Silver Dollar, whose retro-style sign out front blares “Whiskey By The Drink.” Now that I think about it, [...]

It’s been a quite a few years now since a couple of Louisville’s favorite neighborhoods sprouted so many eateries that we dubbed them “Restaurant Rows.” Bardstown Road arguably came first, starting with the Bristol in the 1970s, quickly joined by Jack Fry’s, Cafe Metro, Lilly’s and many more. • THE WINTER OF MY DISCONTENT

    30 Apr 2012 | 9:39 pm
Now that it’s the middle of spring, there’s something I want to get off my chest. First of all, there are a lot of things in life you know you can depend on. For example: within a 24-hour period in most inhabitable parts of this planet, a brilliant yellow-orange orb will rise into the sky from the east. When this happens, it means morning has arrived. Many hours later within that 24-hour period, that same orb will set in the western sky, and night will begin. There are also other signs of nature that happen at timely intervals, like flowers blossoming, birds singing, and, at least once…
  • SHOULD I GET MARRIED? SHOULD I BE GOOD?

    1 Apr 2012 | 1:49 pm
One of my favorite poems is a gem by Gregory Corso titled “Marriage,” that always sets my mind into a squirrel cage of insecurity and possibilities. Should I get married?  Should I be good? Astound the girl next door with my velvet cape and Faustus Hood? While I don’t have a velvet cape and don’t exactly know what a Faustus hood is, I’m amazed and even a little frightened at how much I can relate being married to being good. Usually, when someone reaches my age they’ve been married for 20 or 30 years – with kids and grandkids, or married for a second or third time.

Just when I think it can’t get any more redundant, another presidential primary is given more air time than it probably deserves. Elections, campaigns and primaries can be about as boring as a church service you’re forced to attend and can’t leave. However, I must admit this Republican primary has piqued my interest ... a little.  I wasn’t sure what it was, but I was actually enjoying Newt Gingrich’s all too frank answers about Mitt Romney being a liar and Gingrich being (gasp!) APPALLED that some low life journalist would DARE ask him – at a presidential…

It's a mid-February day here in Louisville, Kentucky, that seems more suited for mid-April. In other words it's way too warm for this time of year. Maybe the earth is trying to break a few laws of physics just to keep us all guessing. Or perhaps time, on some level, is actually accelerating.  At this point in my life, being north of fifty, the archives of perception I possess may have no choice but to compress the several decades I have stored in my memory, making it appear that a yearly passage of time would be shorter until the last day of the last month of the last year I carry around…

Growing up in the late 60's and 70's, I can honestly say I had friends of just about all stripes. They were black, Irish, Chinese-French, Italian, Native American, Greek, from India, and some were just "mutts'. A few were Catholic, some were Hindi, a couple were Jewish, but most were Protestant of various denominations. Some were so dirt poor that they could only hope to move up to public housing. A few were from wealthy families, but the majority were somewhere in the Middle Class. Most seemed to come from stable families, while a few quickly became "survivors" . It wasn't really until I was…

    29 Apr 2012 | 8:49 pm
Illegal immigration is back in the news with the Supreme Court reviewing the constitutionality of Arizona's SB 1070. The law, which passed in April of 2010, really isn't controversial. All it did was take existing but scattered federal laws, codified them, and added teeth to enforce them. Had the federal government done this to begin with, there would have been no need for Arizona's law, which has been copied by five other states.Obama instructed Attorney General Eric Holder, the head of the Department of Justice, to challenge the law. The DOJ alleged that Arizona overstepped its authority by…

Of course, every time a current or former politician or political pundit writes a book, I try to maintain a little healthy skepticism. I'm always concerned that it's going to be another "gotcha" book. More than a few seem to be trying to impress themselves with their name dropping or playing some partisan 'blame game". Was President Obama still "evolving" on equality, was it just his strategy that was metamorphosing, -- or did the Vice President's off-the-cuff comments jumpstart a sudden survival-of-the-fittest sprint? Was Biden a trial balloon or a useful buffoon, the Prez a shrewd strategist or crude pragmatist, or was it just time that leaders started to follow the direction their party & populace were moving? Some argue the announcement's too early politically, some contend that it's long overdue morally, some wonder if the President will even act on it and many think he felt this way all along.

Every week is big for Living Liberally. With 250+ chapters, no week goes by without guest speakers, candidates and advocates, without special events and new promotions. But this is a particularly big week -- not only because of what we're doing but who we're doing it with. This Thursday is the Living Liberally Annual Celebration: a gathering of the tribe, a critical fundraiser, a big old party. This raises most of the funds that support our shoe-string budget for our national programming -- and it does it with an open bar, sustainable food shindig that's a staple of the progressive calendar.

As Americans call for help from their leaders, the GOP seeks help from Rumsfeld & Ted Nugent, showing they are just as desperate as the Americans they are ignoring. Although there are many of them, I have to say that my experiences at the OWS Drinking Liberally chapter at Zuccotti Park easily take the cake. Moreover, I found OWS Drinking Liberally on the whole to be indicative of both what is best about Living Liberally, and Occupy Wall Street itself. It was a perfect match. OWS is an idea, one whose time has come and which never could be evicted. And…
