The Fall Ersatz G.B. (CHERRY RED / MVD) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61D91cCqKqL._SL500_AA300_.jpg It’s tempting to compare vastly different eras of The Fall’s career to one another. After all, The Fall has been a going affair for front man Mark E. Smith for five decades now, with Ersatz G.B. being the latest in a long line of releases. So to make the comparison, the latest, 2012 incarnation of The Fall documented on Ersatz G.B. reminds me most of the relatively accessible mid-1980s version, especially the lineup that recorded the classic album The Wonderful and Frightening World…

Today, President Barack Obama kicks off the third day since his State of the Union address in Ann Arbor, Michigan. There, he’s focusing on keeping college affordable and within reach of all Americans. His key issue of the effort? Reforming student aid to promote affordability and value: To keep tuition from spiraling too high and drive greater value, the President will propose reforms to federal campus-based aid programs to shift aid away from colleges that fail to keep net tuition down, and toward those colleges and universities that do their fair share to keep tuition affordable,…

In case you’ve been sleeping under a Mayan temple, I should remind you that it’s now officially 2012 and R.E.M. is no longer around to belt out the theme song. There’s no turning back the clock to the good old days of Harold Camping’s Bible thumping about the rapture – or any other doomsday scenario that keeps cropping up only to pass with little or no fanfare. The belief that 2012 is the year of the apocalypse comes from an interpretation of the Mesoamerican Mayan calendar made by Mayan scholar Michael Coe. In 1966, Coe felt that a particular…

On January 25, 1533, he entered into a hallowed state of matrimony with Anne Boleyn. (Years later, in 1540 to be exact, he would tie the knot with Anne of Cleaves.) For those keeping score at home, Ms. Boleyn was HVIII’s second wife. Catherine of Aragon was his first. Boleyn provided the King with an heir to the throne, who became rather famous herself, Elizabeth I. But, as you must surmise by now, Henry VIII soon tired of Anne Boleyn, accusing her of philandering and…

The GOP rivals play proud patriotic eagles but attack working families, insult the less fortunate & use code, condescension & coercion to divide America, -- it's not only Romney who can be called a vulture. Big Media conglomerates claim to fight piracy when they behave as predators by nature: they lock content, block creativity, knock competition & make off with the bounty before the ship sinks. Rick Santorum, who represented corporate interests, starts stumping in support of blue collar workers and paints Mitt as an abusive corporate boss. Ron Paul, supposedly an extreme free marketeer, thinks it unfair how Romney's crew has fared in a market that seems to be working for them.
