Swine-proof Santas Prepare for Holiday Onslaught
20 Nov 2009 | 2:08 pmAll this talk of H1N1 deadliness has obscured one important at-risk demographic. They’re not children. They’re not pregnant women. And no, they’re not the elderly. Ye, they be mall Santas. Many of the nation’s Santas want to be given priority for the vaccine and not just because of those runny-nosed kids. There’s also the not-so-little matter of that round belly. Research has suggested obesity could be a risk factor. Swine flu has become such a concern that the Amalgamated Order of Real Bearded Santas featured a seminar on the illness at a recent conference in… -
Bad Food Not To Blame In Prison Riot
20 Nov 2009 | 1:19 pmRemember that Northpoint prison riot back in August that was supposedly caused by bad prison-food? And how people were talking about those damn inmates and how nicely they’re treated? A new report released by the Department of Corrections says that rationale is bullshit, for that matter, and that measures taken by the warden played a much larger role. From The C-J: FRANKFORT, Ky. – Inmates at Northpoint Training Center rioted in August because the warden had put the prison on lockdown four days earlier and implemented a new schedule that restricted inmates’ time in the yard,… -

Cousins, Calipari & Cravat Controversy at Catspause
20 Nov 2009 | 8:36 amLet the kvetching commence! UK beat Sam Houston State handily. Yet, with three fresh faced frosh, playing only their third college game, scoring 66% of the Cats points, the caterwauling still began. Yes, Kentucky’s defense was as substantial as cardboard that sat at the curb in an all day rain. Giving up 18 threes just days after giving up 15 is not the way you win championships. But excuse me if I hold back a bit on the postmortem. If Coach Cal is the deal, and these frosh are even half as talented as their reps would indicate, UK will be way more than just fine. DeMarcus Cousins, he… -

And here we are at Buckeye/ Wolverine weekend and wonder what’s happened to the glamor and excitement? Yawn. The slumbering finale of last week’s Iowa/ Ohio State game was the season in microcosm. Who was the guy who not so long ago wrote that Reggie Delk and Jared Swopshire were the weak links in this year’s version of the Cardinals, that they are the fellows most likely to get lost in the shuffle? Oh yeah, that was me. Oopsy daisy!!! Shows how much I know. (But, hey, you’re here already. Please read on.) Okay, one more question. Who said Ralph Willard would be the best addition for the Cards? 17 Nov 2009 | 2:44 pmRevised 11/18. 10:25 a.m. An alert reader advises that Lou Holtz does not have bad dentures, but suffers from a speech impediment. In fact, he has become and advocate for people suffering similar speech disorders. Thus my attempts at humor regarding his speech are seriously ill advised. I thus have edited my comments in this piece. Apologies to Lou Holtz and to anyone who might have been offended. The Sky is Falling . . . Uh, Wait a Second!
16 Nov 2009 | 7:11 pmThe most disappointing performance of this Monday night — Except for Baltimore and Cleveland who are doing their best U of L vs. ‘Cuse imitation midway through the 2d quarter — is that of the boyz at catspause.com. I mean they’re actually cutting their 2-0 Cats some slack. Perspective. Whodathunkit? Okay, one guy was calling for D’Andre Liggins at the point. IF KING TRULY CARED HE WOULD QUIT NOW
20 Nov 2009 | 4:57 pmHow much more can be said about Jim King. Really. I started an investigation about 1 and 1/2 years ago because I felt that there was some shady campaign finance violations that must be dealt with in order to protect the intent for anyone who runs for office. These were not minor violations there were serious concerns about the money Katie got for her election. What started out as just one simple question: Is it legal? turned into something much greater. I didn't plan it there was no personal vendetta just thought there were relevant questions to be asked and answered for the sanctity of… -

BOZA SIDES WITH JBS: GOOD JOB!
16 Nov 2009 | 4:48 pmI have had a problem for a long time with this whole JBS situation which seemed to really catch fire when an outsider to our area came here 18 months ago by the name of Jon Salomon. The NIMBY folks have gotten away with so much that it is a wonder anything gets accomplished and we have jobs at all.Take the Butchertown area for example. It did not get its name because it smelled of flowers. It got its name because of the Stockyards and meat packaging operations that were so prevalent in our history. 20 Nov 2009 | 8:11 am5. LOUISVILLE STUNS NO. 4 FLORIDA STATE (9/26/02) The Louisville football program's first "signature win" had come more than a decade earlier via a thrashing of Alabama in the Fiesta Bowl, but this was the monumental victory that set the tone for U of L's rise to prominence over the next few years. 20 Nov 2009 | 7:10 amEvery two years, the University of Louisville football teams heads to Tampa to take on the South Florida Bulls with increasingly bad results: 2003: Overtime Loss After Lefors INT 2005: Total WTF game, USF destroys Brohm, Bush, Mario, etc. 45-14. CardsFan922's streak of bad luck watching UofL games at BW3s on Bardstown Road continues (2004 @Marquette, 2004 Renardo Foster tears ACL) 2007: Treat Guy fumbled the opening kick-off for a USF TD and it went down hill from there. This is the only video evidence I could find of the 55-17 beat down: So bad… -
The Dream Dies Where Most Dreams Die....Indiana
20 Nov 2009 | 4:48 amThe Dream Dies Where Most Dreams Die....Indiana Trinity High School product Darren Yeagle scored both goals as Indiana University beat the University of Louisville's No.6-ranked men's soccer team 2-0 Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Hoosiers (11-9-1), who avenged a 4-0 loss to the Cardinals (13-3-4) during the regular season, will play host to Butler at 2p.m. Sunday in the second round. Yeagle, playing in just his third match against the Cardinals, said beating UofL meant a lot to him. "Of yeah — I love it," he said. "After the first 15 minutes, we knew we… -
The best Louisville game of the decade tournament: 3 v. 14
19 Nov 2009 | 11:20 amThe match-ups only get tougher from here on out, Best Louisville Games. You better bring it. 3. LOUISVILLE NOTCHES FIRST BCS BOWL VICTORY OVER WAKE FOREST IN PETRINO'S LAST GAME I don't think it is hyperbole to say that this was the biggest victory in UofL football history (with all due respect to the WVU/Black Out game) that was also the least exciting. Whether it was Fox's terrible coverage, the lack of crowd energy translating to TV, the limited possessions (remember, this was the only season of the new clock rules that allowed teams like Wake to waste a bunch of time), Wake…

It’s Friday. Know Where Your Governor Is?
20 Nov 2009 | 4:54 amMaybe some day Louisville will get something this cool. [Fast Company] Remember all the hot messes former University of Louisville president John Shumaker got into while he was the big man on campus? Yeah? Guess it’s only fitting that UofL would rename the Belknap Research Building the Shumaker Research Building. Makes tons of sense. [Just Thinking] More violence in Jefferson County Public Schools and problems with cell phones? And what the heck is with these kids taking photographs of their patootie with a cellphone? Do parents no longer do their jobs? Jesus H. [WHAS11] Today at noon… -

19 Nov 2009 | 12:00 pmSo, kids, it’s official. Tom Riner – the guy who embarrassed the crap out of Kentucky when he went crazy trying to say “God” is responsible for homeland security, the notorious homophobe, the man whose wife continually steals Democratic positions within the Democratic Party, the guy who consistently buys the black vote – has major Democratic opposition. Mike Slaton: CLICK TO VISIT HIS SITE He’s right on the issues. He’ll be a better representative for the 41st House District. And he won’t use state funds to send out ridiculous re-election… -

20 Nov 2009 | 4:46 amDid you know we have tea company here in Louisville? Like one that makes and bottles tea? Well we do, I learned that recently myself. Called Rooibee it's bottled right here in our fair city. As you know I'm not much of a tea person but I do enjoy red rooibos tea from time to time so I'll definitely have to check it out. Jewelry Trunk Show at The Makery November 20, 2009
19 Nov 2009 | 6:00 amThe Makery is having their first ever trunk show tomorrow night featuring the silver, copper and brass jewelry of local artist Lindsay Hack. Can I confess to you that I don't even know what a trunk sale is? Lindsay Hack, a Louisville native, began making jewelry after a long love affair with all things sparkly and shiny. She started her career with beaded jewelry, but became frustrated with the available supplies at local craft stores. After graduating college with a degree in journalism, she enrolled in a local silversmithing class and began making metal jewelry and findings of her own.

New York’s 23rd Congressional Race and Future of the GOP
2 Nov 2009 | 6:46 pmThe race for New York’s 23rd Congressional District has got to be one of the important elections to come along since the election of Obama; perhaps even more so. However, ever since the election of Ronald Reagan, the Grand Ole Party has shifted further and further to right, especially on social issues while the majority of country has remained pretty much in the middle. Many have referred to this shift as the take over or hijacking of the Republican Party. First, a little history. For decades, the GOP was primarily a center right political party. That is, it premise was to maintain a small… -
Nobel Committee Blunders
17 Oct 2009 | 1:34 pmNow, I’m the first guy who likes to see Americans get the Nobel Peace Prize, but don’t you actually have to do something to earn it? So, what exactly did Obama do during the ten days between the time he was sworn in a President and the cut off date for nominations for the Nobel Award? I don’t know about you, but given the size of the White House, my greatest accomplishment in ten days would be to find the kitchen and all the restrooms! Heck, during the first few weeks after his inauguration, Obama was still picking staff and unpacking. So then, perhaps the best place to start is by… -
Illegal Immigration and the Southern Poverty Law Center: Sending the Wrong Message?
4 Oct 2009 | 6:18 pmHere’s a really interesting article I received from FAIR, the Federation for Immigration Reform folks. I’m sure most of you are familiar with the Southern Poverty Law Center. If not, let me give you a brief history lesson. The SPLC came out of the civil rights movement as way to locate, monitor, and when possible, prosecute so-called hate groups. Over the decades they have been very successful in going after the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis, and a host of other groups of similar nature. They have been hailed as heroes and vilified as a front group for Leftists or Communists (whichever is in… -

The vote is in and our readers overwhelmingly said that church and state should not mix. 66% of our readers wanted to maintain or strenghten the seperation between religion and government. 16% wanted to the wall between the wall to come down, while the remainder thought a little mixture of church and government was ok. Illegal Immigration, Obama’s HealthCare and You: Truth and Consequences.
19 Sep 2009 | 5:33 pmPresident Obama’s healthcare plan continues to make the news, and while most Americans would agree that our nation’s healthcare infrastructure is in shambles, few Americas want to see those here illegally become eligible for any portion of taxpayer benefits. In fact, a number of leading Democrats have quietly begun backing off the so-called “Public Option”. I have gleaned some interesting articles that I thought you might find interesting. I should point out that, in all fairness, I haven’t seen any proposals by the GOP to provide comprehensive health coverage to legal US residents.

Songs I Love, Part XV: “Willie & the Hand Jive” Johnny Otis Show
12 Nov 2009 | 8:14 amWhen you’re 13 years old and male and pubescence has grabbed you in your comfort zone, any song with sexual innuendo resonates. So it was with this rock & roll/ R & B classic that has stood the test of time since its release in 1958. My buddies and I may have interpreted this a tune back then as one about chokin’ the chicken back, but it remains good rockin’ tonight. “Way out Willie/ Gave ‘em all a treat/ When he did the Hand Jive/ With his feet.” Johnny Otis is an interesting study. Born of Greek parents in California, he lived in a black section… -
Leonard Cohen: Still Feisty After All These Years
6 Nov 2009 | 4:45 pmAt some point during the septuagenarian’s marathon three hour concert in Nashville Thursday — two sets, multiple encores — I turned to the Film Babe and offered how glad I am that I never saw Leonard Cohen until this late stage of his career. There is something more palatable about this satyr’s poetic sexual musings, something kind of quaint, now that he’s a bit hunched at age seventy five. And never doubt that this man is a sybarite to the core. A grand poet, genius actually, he is first and foremost a sensualist. Janis Joplin wasn’t the only one you know. -

Is Kragthorpe Almost To End Zone?
21 Oct 2009 | 12:32 pmThe purpose here is to discuss Steve Kragthorpe. More exactly, Steve Kragthorpe’s situation and the downward momentum of his career at Louisville: how he replaced Bobby Petrino, how the team was immediately less good, how the fans became disgruntled, how that disenchantment has escalated to cacophony, and how those fans want him gone — yesterday, if not sooner. But first to Susan Boyle. You remember her, right? She was all the rage as a singing sensation on one of those British who-is-going-to-be-the-next-superstar shows. One day, nobody had ever heard of the frumpy housefrau with the… -
Songs I Love, Part XIV: “Mississippi Queen” Mountain
15 Oct 2009 | 2:04 pmIt may very well be that the phenomenon I’m going to talk about happens only to pubescent boys. But, since that’s a category in which I was once included, it happened to me. So, I’ll start with this premise. For people with a serious inclination toward rock music, there will come a time when their first big guitar song blasts though some radio speakers. And, if you’re alone, or even if your mom is driving you to Bar Mitvah class, you crank up the car radio — with impunity. The song hits you in the loins. The bass drum is always a major kerthink. You turn into…

What Can a President Learn from the News Media?
19 Nov 2009 | 6:00 amFormer President Richard Milhous Nixon rarely watched TV news or read the newspaper and instead relied on a daily summary typed up by his aides, a recently released study says. The study, “What Can a President Learn from the News Media?,” (PDF) says Nixon’s reliance on the daily news summary is a cautionary tale for future presidents. Nixon’s solution to the problem of news consumption was noteworthy: he avoided direct exposure to newspaper, television or radio reports almost entirely. Instead, he instituted an elaborate system of media monitoring that substituted for almost all… -

The winning entry (PDF) used SAS to visualize various aspects of air traffic, including stylish calendar heat maps showing the number of flight departures delayed or cancelled. The heat maps break each year into blocks for months, rows for the days of the week and squares for the days. Each square is colored from red to green depending on the intensity of some value, allowing you to spot patterns over time. The Revolution Computing blog… -
Overcoming PDF apoplexy
17 Nov 2009 | 6:00 amLike many shallow, thoughtless people, my first response to something that annoys me is to condemn it rather than understand it. And so it is with PDFs, which have always pissed me off me because of the difficulty I've had extracting data from them. It's a good thing, then, that the Open Government Data wiki has a page, “The good and the bad of PDFs,” with some realistic scenarios on why people would choose to store information in PDFs, and suggesting that more understanding may be in order, rather than outrage. In my experience reporters tend to think the worst of government bureaucrats,… -
The last words of condemned Texans
16 Nov 2009 | 6:11 amI was fascinated to learn last week that the Texas Department of Criminal Justice puts the last statements of the people it executes on its Web site. That’s 444 people as of this writing, dating back to December 1982. I extracted the statements and uploaded them as one large file to Many Eyes, which has some great tools for visualizing, analyzing and playing with text. Here are the statements displayed as a tag cloud: The most frequently used words of those about to die were “love” and “family.” You can also see the most frequently used two-word phrases. Here “stay… -
Predicting rare events
15 Nov 2009 | 7:00 amJASON, "an independent group of scientists which advises the United States Government on matters of science and technology," was asked by the Defense Department to look at the feasibility of predicting rare events. The “rare event” of interest is an extreme, deliberate act of violence, destruction or socioeconomic disruption, such as an attack of 9/11 scale or greater. It is not a realistic goal to anticipate and prevent all rare events, but it may be possible to make rare events rarer, and to reduce their effect. Their report released last month (PDF) looks at detecting the motivations…

Reid. Right. 'Rithmatic.
19 Nov 2009 | 4:37 amHarry Reid put forth a Senate health bill. & to see who wins & loses, read between the lines. But to get it passed, it's Reid between the lines of progressives & regressives ready for a ruckus. We push universal coverage as a universal right & parts, like skipping Stupak, Reid wrote right ...but we know the Right might fright, bite & fight. When you make change, you can make dollars ...& that just makes sense. Let's hope Obama, the House &… -
A Year Ago vs. A Year To Go
5 Nov 2009 | 6:25 amThe Dems two gubernatorial losses were an open seat & an unpopular incumbent, while the Palin / Pawlenty / Beck-endorsed loss was a seat that hadn't gone Dem in a century. Maine gave us heartbreaking & horrifying vote, but it looks like Washington State voters have battled by ballot to protect gay partnerships (and let's not forget Kalamazoo...). Some good area NY legislators were tossed, yet from Atlanta to Houston, run-off elections are signaling more change in the wind. Some of Election Night hurt, and hurt badly & seemed to take the shine off of last November. Yet we also saw:… -

Conservatives Like Options...It's The Public They Can't Stand
29 Oct 2009 | 6:27 amThe Senate finally nears a healthcare bill but Holy Joe Lieberman wants the option to filibuster with the GOP against progress as 45,000 Americans die yearly from no coverage. The House finally nears a proposal but Blue Dog Dems cling to the option of opposing their party without repercussions & abandoning their voters who want reform. The President pushes us closer to change but the GOP wants the option to opt out, & to sabotage, sully & sink a plan they won't even vote for in the end. Bluegrass Soy Sauce-- This stuff is SO good!
12 Nov 2009 | 6:26 pmI just finished my bottle of Bluegrass Soy Sauce tonight. Used it to cook up some garlic and soy pork chops. I'm a big fan of soy sauce, but I don't think I've ever had soy sauce this good. This is what the bottle says about itself: This sauce is from the only small batch soy sauce brewery in the United States. It's made from whole non-GMO Kentucky grown soybeans and pure limestone filtered Kentucky spring water. The result is a smoky, brothy sauce with hints of oak and a mild sweetness reminiscent of fine Kentucky bourbon. The label is hand labeled with the batch and bottle numbers. And it's… -

Mangino’s anger management inappropriate now that Jayhawks are losing
21 Nov 2009 | 6:40 amAfter being thought of over the past few years as the second greatest person in the state of Kansas behind Bill Self, Kansas University football coach Mark Mangino has come under fire this past week because he is apparently an insensitive meanie. No one in Lawrence seemed to mind when planet Mangino’s tactics were resurrecting the Jayhawk football program from the dead, but now that the team has dropped five strait, he is being deemed a full-blown asshole by former players and fans alike. Apparently, Jayhawk football players are cool with verbal jabs and fighting against their own… -

After addressing their perimeter defensive struggles in their last two contests, he quickly turned the conversation towards Rider and Saturday afternoon. “Eventually, if we continue to play defense like that it, is going to catch up with us. With two games remaining on their regular season schedule, they now set their sites on taking that next step as a program. Congressional Budget Office Estimate of Subsidies and Payments at Different Income Levels Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act(The Senator Reid Bill)
20 Nov 2009 | 10:29 pmDownload Reid_Subsidy_Examples_11-20 for the complete CBO analysis. The enclosed table focuses on enrollees who purchase a “reference” plan—the second lowest cost “silver” plan, as defined in the bill—because federal subsidies would be tied to the premium for it. Such a plan would have an actuarial value of 70 percent, which represents the average share of costs for covered benefits that would be paid by the plan. Although premiums under the bill would vary by geographic area to reflect differences in average spending for health care and would also vary… -

The USGP of Cyclocross Comes to Town, A Story
25 Oct 2009 | 7:43 pmThis weekend, the US Gran Prix of Cyclocross was in Louisville, my hometown. Cyclocross is a nutty mix of cycling and running on grass, dirt and sand. The USGP is a national race series that offers races in a number of different categories, based on experience level, gender and age. Here in Louisville there were some 300? 400? riders. The “big” races are the Men’s and Women’s PRO races… but the rest of them are comprised of folks like me. Why is this man so happy? The USGP is a well-organized, well-sponsored event. The USGP is a circus, and when the circus lands… -

HOWTO: Build a Better Blog
23 Oct 2009 | 6:45 amOver the past couple of years I have found myself perusing and eventually following a number of local/regional/national blogs and sites on stuff that I find interesting – cooking, baseball, model sailplanes, cycling, what-have-you. The best ones are ones backed by interesting people with interesting things to say – at least interesting to me, and that’s what’s important to me. This blog-reading/stalking stuff is very personal. Some blogs do everything “right”, meaning they’ve optimized their site and content for a wide range of viewers – friends… -
My Homebrew Cyclocross Bike
21 Oct 2009 | 3:43 pmIn honor of the USGP Derby City Cup cyclocross race this weekend, I give you this: Look upon my works, ye mighty, and chuckle heartily. What you see before you is my spring/summer waiting-on-the-baby project, a cyclocross bike. It’s a jumble of parts acquired from my basement, local sources, Craiglist and eBay. It is also my first from-the-group-up bike build. Finished in August, I spun it out the River Road Country Club cyclocross (CX for short) course to make sure it wouldn’t fall apart, and then… I raced it at the Tour de Louisville cyclocross race October 4th. The race…

Faculty Blogs: Kudos to the Arbitration Team
19 Nov 2009 | 8:32 amOur arbitration team, Lily Chan, Jamie Izlar, Brandon Edwards, and Samantha Thomas, competed in the ABA Student Division National Arbitration Competition regionals at Creighton this past weekend. Samantha and Brandon competed twice against Chapman. Chapman is known nationally for the competitiveness of its arbitration teams, and one of its teams won the nationals in the arbitration competition last year. True to their reputation, these teams ranked first and second after the first two rounds, and Samantha and Brandon held their own against them. Here are some of the comments Samantha… -
Faculty Blogs: Oral Arguments in Bilski Case
12 Nov 2009 | 12:30 pmOn Monday, November 9, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in the Bilski case, which is an appeal dealing with the the question of patentability of business method patents. A friend of mine that is a patent attorney in New York sent me the transcript. In reading the transcript, it appears to me that Attorney Jakes, arguing for the petitioner, Bilski, did a better job of presenting his case. His reasoning was simple, and clearly explained: Any process that is new and non-obvious, and occurs in the physical world, should be patentable. Attorney Stewart, arguing for the government's… -
Peter Scott Campbell's blog: Parallels between Brandeis and Obama
9 Nov 2009 | 7:08 amIt was Brandeis Day for the Louisville Courier-Journal yesterday (November 8th.) In anticipation of his birthday coming up this Friday, they ran three articles about him. First off, Mel Urofsky excerpted material from his new biography that featured Brandeis’ connection with Louisville. Then there was a book review of the Urofsky biography by Laura Rothstein. Since Laura is a professor (and former Dean) here at the Louis D. Brandeis School of Law, she emphasized the parts of the book that discussed how Brandeis used his positions as lawyer and judge to educate people about the law and… -
Peter Scott Campbell's blog: Harlan and Clarence Thomas’ Color-Blind Constitution
5 Nov 2009 | 11:03 amI feel like I’ve been neglecting Harlan in this blog lately. There’s actually a technological reason for that. When I started this blog I created 2 Westclip searches: one for Brandeis and another for Harlan. My email inbox soon started filling up with notices about Brandeis. I wasn’t particularly disturbed by the fact that I wasn’t getting any messages about Harlan; I just assumed nobody was doing any research on him. Then the other day while logged onto West I decided to take another look at my Westclip searches. Sure enough, I had misconfigured the Harlan search. -
Faculty Blogs: The Supreme Court and el Dia de los Muertos
31 Oct 2009 | 11:51 amLast year I took a class at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft on creating shrines for el dia de los muertos, traditionally celebrated November 2 and 3 in Mexico and parts of the U.S. The class was taught by my friend Suzanne Martino, a gifted assemblage artist. I opted for whimsy over sentiment, celebrating the beloved White Castle on Bardstown Road whose closing in 1988 put a headstone on my and many of my friends' (extended) youth and slacker existence. Suzanne has since returned to Colorado, but as a remembrance (and because assemblage is so fun), I decided to construct another…
