Let the voters decide: A Republican state lawmaker has pre-filed a bill that proposes letting Kentucky voters consider a constitutional amendment to legalize slots. Under Georgetown Sen. Damon Thayer’s proposal, the referendum — if approved — would allocate at least $100 million of slots revenue to the state’s struggling horse industry. At this point, however, it doesn’t look like Democrats want to let the people weigh in, at least not at the polls: “I see no sentiment in our caucus for support of Damon Thayer’s bill,” said Senate Minority Leader Ed…

According to The Courier-Journal, the flailing chopper-maker is considering relocating a 2,500 employee Pennsylvania facility to the greener, cheaper pastures of the Commonwealth. Like many manufacturers, Harley-Davidson is consolidating in the wake of declining sales and is exploring how to cut costs with its largest union. GWAR is a band in the same way that John Wayne Gacy was a party clown. They have their ulterior motives, one of which is the no-holds-barred satire of their stage show. It is something that is actually bawdy, obscene and in your face, not some elevated humor trying to hearken back to Swift. As a stage show, they work as a real mash up of popular culture - often bringing figures from news headlines up on stage a little too soon (I seem to remember a lot of boos and what-the-hells when they brought an effigy of the Virginia Tech shooter onto the stage at Sounds of the Underground). This is especially important for new construction as the home occupancy certification is needed before the home buyers can legally move in. In all cases, the local building codes are the most authoritative answer as to what constitutes an official bedroom. The following is the…

Looks like the Jerry Abramson – Cordish Companies hot mess has spread all across the land: The mayor said he’s pushing for the arena/hotel-casino/entertainment district project, number one, as a way to get jobs for the community. He’s also pushing for it as a way to revitalize the downtown. Cordish’s projects in both Louisville and Kansas City have revitalized those formerly two dead downtowns with vibrant, energetic live entertainment districts, he said. “My friend, the mayor of Louisville, said they’re just giving Cordish as much land as Cordish will…

  • First Friday, Boudreaux's and a Word from Your Host

    6 Nov 2009 | 6:54 am
It's time for the first Friday November 2009 edition. In addition to the Louisville Beer Store opening tonight the other thing that caught my eye is the mention of Boudreaux's, the new creole place that recently opened on Main Street. First, any mention of the word "Boudreaux" must be followed with a link to an awesome scene featuring the best Boudreax ever: Ouiser Boudreaux. Now that that's taken care of we can move on. I enjoy creole food (well the creole food that I can find that doesn't contain shellfish or pork) so I'm really curious about Boudreaux's. For First Friday tonight they've…
  • Unexpected Entry in the Hot Chocolate Search: Wild Eggs

    6 Nov 2009 | 5:05 am
Last week we had lunch at Wild Eggs with a couple friends. We were almost finished with our meal when we saw the most glorious concoction of marshmallows and chocolate syrup float by to the table next to us. I hadn't event noticed that Wild Eggs had hot chocolate on the menu. So of course I had to order a hot chocolate for dessert. The hot chocolate was super super hot. It took forever to be cool enough to drink. It was frothy and had a pleasant enough chocolate flavor. The real treat of this hot chocolate though is obvious in the picture: chocolate syrup and marshmallows. Of all the hot…
  • 10% Off Pumpkin Pie Latte at Heine Brothers

    5 Nov 2009 | 6:36 am
I had occasion to stop by the Heine Brothers at Douglass Loop yesterday. Well ok that's not quite true. The truth is Heine Brothers posted the picture at right of their Pumpkin Pie Latte and it looked so delicious I stopped by there in the afternoon to get one even though I already had a meeting scheduled at Heine Brothers for later in the evening. So yes, I was at Heine Brothers Douglass Loop twice in one day. I got my pumpkin pie latte to go so it didn't look quite as beautiful as the one in the photo but it tasted very good. Pumpkin pie lattes are 10% off at Heine Brothers until November…
  • Kentucky, Crime and New Zealand?

    5 Nov 2009 | 6:35 am
Interesting is probably not the right word to describe an event focused on crime and punishment but it's the only one I've got. New Zealand is a country with a population of 4.2 million-almost exactly the size of Kentucky.   In the 80's they faced a crisis in the juvenile justice system.  After a process of listening to the community, the country enacted legislation in 1989 to move to a "restorative" approach to juvenile justice.  The "restorative" approach is unique in that it involves victims, offenders and the community in the justice process.Kentucky now is faced with…

  • New York’s 23rd Congressional Race and Future of the GOP

    2 Nov 2009 | 6:46 pm
The race for New York’s 23rd Congressional District has got to be one of the important elections to come along since the election of Obama; perhaps even more so. However, ever since the election of Ronald Reagan, the Grand Ole Party has shifted further and further to right, especially on social issues while the majority of country has remained pretty much in the middle. Many have referred to this shift as the take over or hijacking of the Republican Party. First, a little history. For decades, the GOP was primarily a center right political party. That is, it premise was to maintain a small…

So, what exactly did Obama do during the ten days between the time he was sworn in a President and the cut off date for nominations for the Nobel Award? I don’t know about you, but given the size of the White House, my greatest accomplishment in ten days would be to find the kitchen and all the restrooms! Heck, during the first few weeks after his inauguration, Obama was still picking staff and unpacking. So then, perhaps the best place to start is by…

Here’s a really interesting article I received from FAIR, the Federation for Immigration Reform folks. I’m sure most of you are familiar with the Southern Poverty Law Center. If not, let me give you a brief history lesson. The SPLC came out of the civil rights movement as way to locate, monitor, and when possible, prosecute so-called hate groups. Over the decades they have been very successful in going after the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis, and a host of other groups of similar nature. They have been hailed as heroes and vilified as a front group for Leftists or Communists (whichever is in…

President Obama’s healthcare plan continues to make the news, and while most Americans would agree that our nation’s healthcare infrastructure is in shambles, few Americas want to see those here illegally become eligible for any portion of taxpayer benefits. In fact, a number of leading Democrats have quietly begun backing off the so-called “Public Option”. I have gleaned some interesting articles that I thought you might find interesting. I should point out that, in all fairness, I haven’t seen any proposals by the GOP to provide comprehensive health coverage to legal US residents.

At some point during the septuagenarian’s marathon three hour concert in Nashville Thursday — two sets, multiple encores — I turned to the Film Babe and offered how glad I am that I never saw Leonard Cohen until this late stage of his career. There is something more palatable about this satyr’s poetic sexual musings, something kind of quaint, now that he’s a bit hunched at age seventy five. And never doubt that this man is a sybarite to the core. A grand poet, genius actually, he is first and foremost a sensualist. Janis Joplin wasn’t the only one you know.

More exactly, Steve Kragthorpe’s situation and the downward momentum of his career at Louisville: how he replaced Bobby Petrino, how the team was immediately less good, how the fans became disgruntled, how that disenchantment has escalated to cacophony, and how those fans want him gone — yesterday, if not sooner. So, I’ll start with this premise. For people with a serious inclination toward rock music, there will come a time when their first big guitar song blasts though some radio speakers. And, if you’re alone, or even if your mom is driving you to Bar Mitvah class,  you crank up the car radio — with impunity. The song hits you in the loins. The bass drum is always a major kerthink. But, in 1988, I was lured back by the prospect of experiencing the Little Feat reunion. With Bonnie Raitt, sitting in on slide guitar, be still my beating heart. The Ideological History of the Supreme Court, 1937-2007, is a nice visualization designed by Alex Lundry that uses scores developed by two political scientists to measure where the justices have stood on an “ideological continuum” from liberal to conservative. You can download the visualization in spreadsheet form, play with it and see how it was done. Boiling a judge’s judicial philosophy down to a score is a tricky business, and not everyone likes it. You can get a flavor of that by reading The Distorting Slant of Quantitative Studies of Judging, by a law professor.   [via…

    6 Nov 2009 | 8:36 pm
The Boston Globe, November 7, 2009 A new study puts the number of deaths among Americans between the ages of 18 and 64 associated with lack of health insurance at 44,789 a year. US government agencies typically use a figure around $7 million to represent the lost economic output from each death. If we conservatively use only half of the government figure, or $3.5 million, it suggests that the annual cost to the US economy of 40,000 deaths is about $140 billion. Linda Bilmes is a faculty member at the Harvard Kennedy School, where she teaches public finance. Rosemarie Day is deputy director of…

  • The Congressional Budget Office Director’s Blog for November 6, 2009: Updated Estimate for Health Care Legislation Pending in the House

    Drteds
    6 Nov 2009 | 7:57 pm
Earlier today, I posted a blog about the cost estimate for the health care legislation pending in the House. I explained how the repeal of certain tax rules in H.R. 3962, the health care bill, would now generate less revenue because the rules would only be in effect for two years during the 2010-2019 period as a result of the unemployment legislation that was signed into law today. The original estimate for the impact of that repeal under H.R. 3962, about $26 billion over the 10-year period, will now be reduced to about $6 billion. CBO just issued an updated estimate for the health…

    6 Nov 2009 | 7:46 pm
The American Prospect, October 27, 2009 by Robert Kuttner   What are our fondest hopes and worst fears for the health legislation now slouching towards the president's desk? On the plus side, it will cover slightly more than half of America's uninsured, qualify more of the near-poor for Medicaid, and it may lead to some greater rationalization of health outlays. On the minus side, the plan leaves most people dependent on employers for health coverage and reinforces the political and economic power of the private insurance industry. It subsidizes insurers with more than half a…

  • The USGP of Cyclocross Comes to Town, A Story

    25 Oct 2009 | 7:43 pm
This weekend, the US Gran Prix of Cyclocross was in Louisville, my hometown. Cyclocross is a nutty mix of cycling and running on grass, dirt and sand. The USGP is a national race series that offers races in a number of different categories, based on experience level, gender and age. Here in Louisville there were some 300? 400? riders. The “big” races are the Men’s and Women’s PRO races… but the rest of them are comprised of folks like me. Why is this man so happy? The USGP is a well-organized, well-sponsored event. The USGP is a circus, and when the circus lands…

  • HOWTO: Build a Better Blog

Over the past couple of years I have found myself perusing and eventually following a number of local/regional/national blogs and sites on stuff that I find interesting – cooking, baseball, model sailplanes, cycling, what-have-you. The best ones are ones backed by interesting people with interesting things to say – at least interesting to me, and that’s what’s important to me. This blog-reading/stalking stuff is very personal. Some blogs do everything “right”, meaning they’ve optimized their site and content for a wide range of viewers – friends…

In honor of the USGP Derby City Cup cyclocross race this weekend, I give you this: Look upon my works, ye mighty, and chuckle heartily. What you see before you is my spring/summer waiting-on-the-baby project, a cyclocross bike. It’s a jumble of parts acquired from my basement, local sources, Craiglist and eBay. It is also my first from-the-group-up bike build. Finished in August, I spun it out the River Road Country Club cyclocross (CX for short) course to make sure it wouldn’t fall apart, and then… I raced it at the Tour de Louisville cyclocross race October 4th. The race…

  • Peter Scott Campbell's blog: Harlan and Clarence Thomas’ Color-Blind Constitution

    5 Nov 2009 | 11:03 am
I feel like I’ve been neglecting Harlan in this blog lately. There’s actually a technological reason for that. When I started this blog I created 2 Westclip searches: one for Brandeis and another for Harlan.  My email inbox soon started filling up with notices about Brandeis. I wasn’t particularly disturbed by the fact that I wasn’t getting any messages about Harlan; I just assumed nobody was doing any research on him. Then the other day while logged onto West I decided to take another look at my Westclip searches. Sure enough, I had misconfigured the Harlan search.
  • Faculty Blogs: The Supreme Court and el Dia de los Muertos

    31 Oct 2009 | 11:51 am
Last year I took a class at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft  on creating shrines for el dia de los muertos, traditionally celebrated November 2 and 3 in Mexico and parts of the U.S.  The class was taught by my friend Suzanne Martino, a gifted assemblage artist.  I opted for whimsy over sentiment, celebrating the beloved White Castle on Bardstown Road whose closing in 1988 put a headstone on my and many of my friends' (extended) youth and slacker existence.  Suzanne has since returned to Colorado, but as a remembrance (and because assemblage is so fun), I decided to construct another…

Mel Urofsky visited Brandeis University on September 29 and gave a speech about his new biography Louis D. Brandeis: A Life. He doesn’t read from the book, but he does do a good job covering all of the themes of the book, while throwing in some good anecdotes.  The speech is included in its entirety (with Q&A) online. It makes for a pretty good introduction to the book. Now if only someone can raise the money to bring him to Louisville.
  • Faculty Blogs: GeoCities, Dead at 15

    27 Oct 2009 | 12:49 pm
Beloved early Internet icon GeoCities died today at the age of 15, slowly smothered by its adoptive parent Yahoo. Web pioneers fondly remember its rich neighborhoods, from the geeky confines of SiliconValley and Area51 to the bohemian districts of Soho, SouthBeach and SunsetCity.  There they learned the power and joy of personal publishing, even if it only concerned the question of whether Abe Vigoda was dead or alive, or the relative cuteness of their and their friend's cats.  It was preceded in death by the HMTL 1.0 Stylesheet, the blink tag and the dancing baby animated gif (shown on the…
